2021 Ford F-150 Vs. 2021 Nissan Titan: The Ford F-150 is the full-size truck to beat in 2021. Other automakers test their towing, hauling, and even sales numbers against the might of the Ford F-150. Nissan has come closer than ever at dethroning the F-150 with its Titan full-size pickup. They have found chinks in the F-150’s armor and created a nice space for their truck to shine through. Here are all the details for a vehicle comparison.

Different Styles of the Ford and Nissan Pick-up Trucks

The 2021 Nissan Titan comes in crew cab with a full-sized back seat and king cab which has a smaller truck bed and half door for the rear seat occupants. The crew cab comes in S, SV, SL, Pro 4X, and Platinum Reserve models. The king cab slims down on the number of available trims and offers just the S, Pro-4X and SV.

The 2021 Ford F-150 is available as a regular cab with just two doors, SuperCab (the same as the Nissan king cab), and SuperCrew with a full-sized back seat. Beyond that, there are 6 different model trims. There’s the base model XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.

The Ford F-150 has a dated exterior in any model. It’s classic but boring. The King Ranch F-150 has some attractive color options, but otherwise it’s just more chrome. On the other hand, the Nissan Titan truck has a muted exterior with less chrome finery. The bit of black paneling across the rear tailgate adds a nice contrast to the exterior color palette. The Titan has its own style from front grille to tailgate.

The Ford F-150 has a handsome Platinum model, but nothing changes the overall design of the exterior. The 2021 Nissan Titan Pro-4X has a bed-mounted sport bar and rugged mud flaps. You’d have to look to the Ford Raptor truck to match the Titan’s off-road style.

Which Truck Has Better Performance?

The 2021 Ford F-150 full-sized truck has 6 different engines options. It’s the only pick-up truck in its class with a 3.5 Liter Hybrid V6 engine. It gets 430 horsepower and 570 pound feet of torque. You can also use the hybrid powertrain to provide 2.4 kW or 7.2 kW of electrical power to the jobsite or the campsite. The hybrid V6 is capable of towing 12,700 pounds and managing a payload of 2,120 lbs. with the right package options.

Nissan is quick to boast that it has best in class power, but that’s just for V8 engines. The 2021 Nissan Titan has a 5.6 Liter V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb. ft. of torque. The comparable Ford V8 engine is 5.0 Liters with 395 hp and 400 lb. ft. of torque.

What the Ford Ti-VCT engine lacks in power, it makes up for with best-in-class payload. It can carry 3,325 lbs. The best Titan pick-up truck has a maximum towing capacity of 9,310 lbs. and a payload of 1,690 lbs.

Is the Ford F-150 Safer than the Nissan Titan?

The 2021 Ford F-150 pick-up truck has a high strength steel frame and aluminum alloy body. As the saying goes, it’s built “Ford Tough”. Automatic emergency braking and automatic headlights come standard on all models, but the base model truck is a bit lacking in advanced safety features.

That’s where the 2021 Nissan Titan swoops in for the rescue. It has best-in-class standard safety features. Without an additional package, drivers benefit from having rear automatic braking and cross traffic alerts, blind spot warnings, lane departure warnings and more.

Once you get to the higher trims for the F-150 you start to see features like blind-spot monitors, active lane control, reverse automatic emergency braking, and driver alert. You can add improved Co-Pilot 360 packages on top of that to get even better safety features such as evasive steering assist and speed sign recognition.

Crash test results aren’t verified yet for 2021, but the 2020 Nissan Titan received 4 stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and good rankings in all of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) categories. The 2020 Ford F-150 was able to match those results for the NHTSA but received one poor mark from the IIHS for its headlights.

Interior Comfort of the F-150 vs the Nissan Titan

The interior quality of the 2021 Ford F-150 has a wide range. You can go from heavy duty vinyl with rubber floors to plush leather bucket seats and big screens. The center dashboard console has big buttons for stubby workhands and plenty of cubby space for tools and coolers. The focus is less on comfort and more on utility inside the F-150.

The 2021 Nissan Titan counters with enough high technology and creature comforts to rival a luxury crossover. The 2021 Titan has an available dual-pane panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel, and power sliding rear window. It’s got some functionality, too. The rear seat folds down for a wide work desk and the seats can lift up for additional under-seat storage.

Here is a quick comparison list:

The Truck with Better Style – The 2021 Ford F-150 pick-up has more options than the Nissan Titan. However, the Titan’s novelty and style upgrades for the Pro-4X model edge out a win in this category.

The Truck with More Power – The 2021 Nissan Titan can own the title of best V8 power, but the Ford F-150 matches it with a hybrid V6. Plus, Ford offers five other powertrain options just in case you want to get picky.

The Truck with the Best Towing and Payload – It’s not even close in this category. The 2021 Ford F-150 pick-up truck has better towing and payload than the Nissan Titan. This is the F-150’s strong suit and you’d have to jump up to the Titan XD to match it.

The Truck with the Best Safety – The 2021 Ford F-150 is tough and so is the Nissan Titan. However, the 2021 Nissan Titan offers more safety features at entry level and doesn’t make owners jump through package deal hoops to get them.

The Truck with the Best Interior – It’s a bit of a tie in this category because both pick-up trucks have amazing interiors. You can opt for comfort without sacrificing utility in either case. What you will sacrifice is extra money on the F-150 though. Its amenities come with a high price.

Which Pick-up Truck is Better?

The Nissan Titan only has its powerful V8 while Ford offers 5 other engine options. That’s a big deal when you consider that pick-ups need to do different things. For example, someone might be drawn to the better fuel economy of the Ford EcoBoost Turbo Diesel and find that the Titan’s V8 power is just a matter of numbers on paper.

The F-150 is more affordable. The 2021 Nissan Titan also costs hundreds more than it did last year. It has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $36,550. The entry level 2021 Ford F-150 costs $28,940. That’s a huge gulf that leaves the Nissan Titan straining to promote its best features.

Nissan has a stellar 5-year/100,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty. It also has all the top tier safety features as standard equipment on every truck. There are fewer model trim choices for the Titan, which can come as a relief to some consumers who don’t want to spend all day on the lot deciding which one is better.

The Ford F-150 has a dated style, but that’s never stopped Ford from selling units. There are several different style packages available, but there aren’t too many different ways you can slice the same cut of beef. Ford has brand recognition over Nissan in the full-size pick-up category and the F-150’s style doesn’t seem to age.

Overall, the proof is in the numbers. The Ford F-150 is more popular and that’s for a reason. You can whittle the base model into just about any type of truck you need. The Nissan Titan can’t match that sort of variability. When it’s all said and done, these full-size trucks cost about the same, but the 2021 Ford F-150 is clearly winning with more options on the table.
